A Sports Cake for a True Athlete

This cake, as you can see, was for a very busy young man. He loves football and baseball and it was hard for his mom to decide which he would prefer …. So we did both!

I admit I had a little trouble getting it all on there. His favorite cake is Italian cream so Italian cream it was…. four layers … and from scratch no less!! To make it easier to attach the decoration I left the nuts out of the top icing and just used them on the sides of the cake. The icing was homemade cream cheese with pecans …. mmmmmm . It was hard keeping the hubs away from this one for sure!

I used rice krispies to shape the football and covered it with gum paste. The baseball was formed over styro foam also with gum paste. The balls were both ‘stitched’ with regular buttercream icing.

The school’s ‘lightening H’ logo was cut from red white and blue fondant … layered one on top of the other for a 3-D effect and glued together with piping gel. The shirt and his number 8 are fondant.

Laying the rest of the decorations on top of the logo, I think, tied it all together very well … be true to your school …  I’ve heard them say!!
