I made this cake for my son's eighth birthday party. I used two sheet cakes layered on top of each other with cream cheese frosting filling. I trimmed the tops of the cakes before stacking them so that they would be even. I used white store bought frosting for the outside which I colored with black and blue gel food coloring. My original idea was to make the frosting black to mimic space, but discovered how hard it was to make black frosting. No matter how much black food coloring I added it still looked gray. So I added the blue and it came out a nice dark blue color. I frosted the cake and added the bottom ribbon and lettering which were cut out of plain white fondant. I printed the Star Wars logo off the web to use for cutting out the letters. This was the first time I used fondant and found it surprisingly easy to work with. I added white sprinkles to mimic stars. I was going to put the action figures on the cake but my son liked them better on the board. That's it. I'm not a cake decorator but this cake was pretty easy and I really like how it turned out.
