Surfing Cake

This was a cake I did for my son Max's 7th birthday. The large wave is actually styrofoam covered in frosting, as there was no way I could get cake to stay up so high without it falling over! All other elements are made of gumpaste or rolled fondant and are edible.

The little boy buried in the sand is my younger son, Sam. (He still talks about how "Max buried me in the sand and I was so angry". I have to keep reminding him that it was only a cake! :)

The whale in the surf is gumpaste and has a spout made of hard candies melted and formed into the spout shape. The sand is graham cracker crumbs and the chairs, palm tree, sand castle and bottle of suntan lotion are all gumpaste. The water is just colored icing. The cake stood at about 2 feet tall.
