This cake was bought frosted (but not decorated) due to problems with time. Almost all decorations are made with royal icing that was made to look like coral and seaweed. We bought the little mermaid figures online and decided to put them on the cake in different places. Eirc and his dog are on the top layer that is supposed to be the beach, above land. We just used brown sugar and decorations form a specialty store. The rest of the cake is under the sea. My daughter and I worked for only about 30 minutes decorated the cake but the royal icing sat for about 3 days in order to harden. I decided on a layered look to give the cake depth and set up an interesting design scheme. Assorted gummies and other candies, as well as home made chocolate shells, also gave the cake a whimsical look. The birthday girl was excited about the end result.
