Train cake

Our son is a train fanatic. He was turning 5 and wanted a Geo-Trax themed party. We had done Thomas already so I had to try something new. I mixed my frosting colors and smoothed some of the green and brown out on waxed paper to dry. It needs to be a thin layer so it can dry out. I let it set out like that overnight. Once dry, I scrapped it off and chopped it up to make a crumble. I used an 11 x 15 pan with white cake and smoothed it with green frosting. I used pieces of his actual Geo-Trax toys to make the scene. The train was a present for his birthday so I used it as the topper. I smoothed some blue for a little lake and mixed some gray icing to make rocks. I piped brown icing around the tracks using a #16 tip and then added the brown crumbs. I sprinkled the green crumbs over the cake and added a little finishing touch on the bottom of the cake with white frosting. It was really a fun cake and our son just loved it.
