Original Winnie the Witch Birthday Cake

I was asked by a family member who works for Oxford Publishers to make her daughter a Winnie the Witch cake, in line with Halloween. She and her daughter loves the Winnie books! Alison turned 6 on Halloween this year and so her mom swayed her to go with something a little different to the usual Dora’s and Barbies. It was the first time I heard about Winnie the Witch, even though she has apparently been around for 25 years!

And so I discovered a fun, clumsy, scraggly figure that I was to replicate in an edible form *sweat dripping*.

I admit I found the task ahead to be very daunting indeed, but it turned out to be lots of fun. The idea was to create the cake as a book and have the Winnie figurine sitting on it. Because she is quite scraggly, I couldn’t really start her beforehand and had to build her piece by piece on the cake. This is the happy result.

It did however take lots of doweling and toothpicks to get her to be stable and at one stage she broke and fell over backward. Next time I will know exactly how much she needs to be propped up! Or any similar figurine…

Figurines can take hours and hours, so never underestimate the time it takes. And factor in some time for it to stabilize as well. As with any good structure, the framework has to be strong and able to withstand leaning and weight – as in this Winnie’s case. The birthday girl and mom – avid Winnie the Witch fans – thought I did her justice and were both very happy.
