My grandson Hank’s 5th birthday party was reptile themed, so an alligator cake was in order. I drew lots of inspiration from the other cakes on this wonderful site (thanks, all!) and tossed around several diff’t ideas before settling on this one.
I mixed up the buttercream frosting the night before and had a devil of a time with the two greens. I did not want it grass green, but neither did I want it pea green, so I tried for a happy medium. I drew out a template and made sure the finished product would fit on my cake board and then in the cake box (1/2 sheet). I made two 9 x 13 sheet cakes; the head and tail was cut from one and the body was cut from the other. I used cupcakes cut in half for the feet and piped in toenails with black tube icing.
I decorated it with the star tip, using a lighter green for some contrast. I almost forgot the teeth. In fact, I DID forget the teeth and had to pull the cake out of the fridge (after the icing had already set) to put the marshmallow teeth on. This was tricky as once you cut into a marshmallow, it is one sticky mess. I cut my triangle shaped teeth and stuck them in the cake using toothpicks. I think if my icing would have been soft, I may hve been able to omit the toothpicks, but I was too impatient (and tired) to wait for the icing to soften up. With or without the teeth, I’m groud of my gator!
