Birthday Castle Cake

I got the idea for a castle cake for my daughter’s 5th birthday from the movie “Knocked Up”. I thought it would be a fun project. I searched castle cakes on-line and this website came up and what a wonderful website it is.

I took some ideas from other cakes on this site to make this one.

The bottom cake layer was a chocolate cake mix baked in a wooden pan to make it nice and flat and the second layer was a french vanilla cake mix also baked in a wooden 9X13 pan. The middle part was 3 mini loaves iced together and the walls were also mini loaves cut into slices and stacked on with icing made from a carrot cake mix. It was a very good combination of flavours.

It was iced in buttercream icing. We used #10 and #12 tips to make the blobs of two shades of purple to make the rocks for the walls. We used #16 and #18 tips to make the stars in two shades of pink for the top walls and around the ice cream cone towers.

The ice cream cones for the towers and trees were covered in candy melts. It was my cousin’s and my first time using them and it was fun to do. We’ll be doing that on our upcoming projects.

We used strawberry waffer cookies sliced in half and cut into squares to ’tile’ the walls inside the top part nad make the draw bridge. It was too hard to ice the inside of the top part so this was an easy solution.

The flags are attached using little dobs of icing to hold them to the towers. To finish off, we used the “Little People” form my daughter’s castle set. They fit perfectly.
