Coolest Freezer Cake

Well, I trawled the internet when asked for a cake in the shape of a freezer for a couple who were starting a new venture opening a freezer food centre, and could not find one anywhere. So, I thought I would just have to design one myself.

I made a chocolate sponge in an 8 inch square tin and then cut in half so I had two oblongs. These I split and layered with chocolate fudge which I make with chocolate gnashe with extra icing sugar added. I then crumb coated the whole thing with vanilla buttercream and then covered with white MMF. Set to thinking what I could use for the lid and eventually just rolled out some MMF strengthened with gum tragacanth, very thinly and cut out an oblong, same size as the cake. I left this to dry.

Meanwhile I made a black plinth for the freezer, signs and knobs and vents and painted them with edible paints. I also made a heart to write a message on. I also made several ‘bags’ and ‘boxes’ of frozen food and painted them. I then assembled the whole thing by piping royal icing around the top of the freezer and inserting two kebab sticks which I then propped the lid against and left to set. I glued on the signs and other bits with edible glue and then sprinkled the top of the freezer with white glitter dust to look like frost.

Everyone loved the look and the taste of the freezer cake!
