Coolest 1st Birthday Monkey Cake

This is a monkey cake I made, from scratch, for my 1 year old’s birthday party. The inside is chocolate cake. The monkey’s face is two 8-inch rounds. I put chocolate icing in the center to hold the cakes together.

The monkey’s ears are made from 2 tart pans. I cut the tart pan cakes in half and stacked them on top of each other. The ears had to be held together with a toothpick so they wouldn’t fall over.

I drew the outline of the monkey face in black icing first and then filled in the light brown chocolate icing. I just mixed a little white icing in with the chocolate to make it light brown.

I used the Wilton star tip for the whole cake except for the monkey’s eyes and tongue. The texture made it look like real fur! While I was icing the cake, I had to put the cake in the refrigerator every so often, so the icing would harden back up. The stars were easier to do with firmer icing.

This homemade 1st birthday monkey cake was very time consuming, but worth it! It was a big hit at my son’s party!
