I made this 3D basketball cake for my son’s 2nd birthday. I used the sports ball pan from Wilton. The best thing about Wilton is they give you different decorating ideas for each pan you buy and tell you which coloring gels to use to get the perfect color.
I thought the color on this turned our wonderfully. It only requires 1 boxed cake mix. I tinted white store bought icing according to the Wilton directions and used black icing gel to make the lines. It seems to be a small cake so I used it as my son’s personal cake to tear into. My biggest tip for this cake would be to make sure and cut a good flat bottom for it to sit on.
I cut it down a little, but during transporting it, I was scared to death it was going to roll off the board! My son loved this cake. I think a 3-D object has such a greater impact than the flat cakes and it was fun to do. Good Luck!
