Coolest Angry Birds Birthday Cake with Fondant Figures

Each year, it seems like my birthday cakes are getting more elaborate. It’s really fun to take a theme and just run with it. I created this Homemade Angry Birds Birthday Cake for my son, Aidan, who was turning six. He loves Angry Birds and really wanted it for his birthday theme. The problem is that there are no Angry Birds party accessories, so everything had to be hand-made – from the piñata, to the balloons, to the cake. We also had to feed at least 60 people, so it had to be a lot of cake!

I started making the characters a few days prior to his party – they are made out of ready-to-use Wilton fondant frosting – the pigs, red, and yellow birds were made of pre-colored fondant in primary colors. In the past, I found it hard to get really red colored frosting, so I thought the pre-colored fondant would be easier. I pretty much free-handed the characters, just referencing the pictures from the game and looking at other cakes posted on-line. Some of the details (like the eye-balls) were drawn on the white fondant with an edible icing writer pen. Some of the fondant color had to be made with gel food coloring (the blue birds and slingshot).

I made the cake the day before the party. Aidan loves guava, so it is guava cake with guava filling and a buttercream icing – yum!! The wooden structure was large Tootsie Rolls held up and put together with skewers. The rock border on the base was made of chocolate covered raisins.

It was a blast to make this cake. It was the first time I made figures out of fondant – that part was actually pretty easy – just like molding Play-Doh. Everyone was in awe of the cake and Aidan loved it!
