Fast and Easy Homemade Army Tank Birthday Cake

I made this Homemade Army Tank Birthday Cake for my sister-in-laws boyfriend who just came home from Korea. I have developed quite a niche for baking and cooking these days. She loves my creations so I was privileged to make this for her.

Sheet cakes are still new to me so I was a little nervous to start. I am the type that only bakes from scratch. I made a basic yellow cake in a 9×13 pan on Friday morning. When it cooled off I wrapped it in clear wrap and tin foil, placed it back in the pan and put it back in the freezer until I got home from work at about 9pm.

Then I whipped up a quick batch of basic butter cream icing, using 3/4 cup of unsalted room temp. butter, 2tblsp vanilla, and approx. 1 1/2 lb of powdered sugar. Next, I sliced about 6in. off the end of the cake to make the top. Then it was time to color the icing. I split the icing between 3 bowls and added different mixtures of food coloring to make the green, brown, and tan. I also added a little cocoa powder to the brown for a little extra flavor.

I applied the different splotches with a spoon. The wheels are mint stuffed Oreos to add some color (I just took the tops off), the tracks are Dark Chocolate Hershey, and the cannon is a candy coated pretzel. I broke the legs off of the army man from the Dollar Store and cut a small hole in the top. Also, I used one of the tops of the Oreos and iced it for the cover.

It was SO much more simple then I expected! I was finished and my kitchen was cleaned by 11pm!
