My dad loves to watch the birds in the garden so I thought this year I would make him a Homemade Bird Watching Cake.
I baked the cake in a 2 pint pudding bowl left to cool overnight then I crumb coated it and put in fridge to cool. Meanwhile the icing to cover the cake I coloured brown then kept a small amount aside for the birds and the log which the bird is sitting on. I then rolled out and covered the cake. I put the cake aside while I coloured three seperate batches of icing three different colours of green for the leaves, and started to cut out leaf shapes keeping them under cling film until ready to use so they didn’t dry out.
I did some flesh coloured icing for the man’s face and hands, and blue for the man’s arms and a small amount of black for the binoculars, shaped all the pieces and attached to the cake, then I started adding the leaves until the whole cake was covered.
I then shaped the birds and made a small amount of yellow for the beaks and tail of the birds, then I added some white eyes to the birds. To finish off I coloured some coconut with a little green food colouring paste in my food processor to make it look like grass and sprinkled it around the base of the cake and log.
My dad loved it!
