Coolest Black and White Star Birthday Cake

I made this Black and White Star Birthday Cake by using a basic sponge recipe, 6 eggs, and 375g self-raising flour, caster sugar and margarine and 185g plain flour. The mixture was then divided between two 5” and two 7” square cake tins.

I began by trimming the crust from the cakes and leveling them off using a serrated knife. I sandwiched the cakes together and spread a layer of buttericing over them using a mixture of 150g margarine and 300g icing sugar. I coloured some sugar paste black using food colouring paste as I find the colour takes better than ordinary food colouring. This was then used to completely cover the smaller cake, trimming off any excess to be used later. I covered the larger cake in the same way using white sugarpaste. I used a cake smoother to ensure the cakes were smooth all over.

I then stacked the cakes together and added black stars of various sizes to the white cake and white stars to the black cake. I used star cutters to make the stars and stuck them on all over in no particular order using sugar glue. I piped a border around the bottom edges of both cakes using royal icing and a star tip. I also used the icing to write the birthday message on the board. I bought a black and white star wired spay from the Internet, which I pushed through the top of the cake until I achieved the desired level. I then made a hole around the spray by cutting into it in triangular shapes, which I pulled up to, make it look like the spray was bursting out of it. Filling in the space with white sugarpaste.

In future I would try to make my own wired spray, as it was more expensive than I wanted to pay but I wouldn’t change anything else.
