Cute Homemade Carousel Birthday Cake Decorated with M&Ms

We made this Carousel Birthday Cake for my son’s 1st birthday, which was a carnival theme. It was fairly easy-even for an amateur. I made 2 12″ round cakes for the bottom and 2 9″ round cakes for the top layer. I found the carousel on eBay-it was from Wilton, but it’s over 30 years old.

We decorated the cakes with M&Ms, rock candy, the animal toppers (which I found on eBay) and some decorations that I found at Michaels (the clown faces, party hats and elephant icing decorations-which are on the bottom layer). The little circus tent on the top is also from Michael’s and it came with some cupcake wrappers and toothpick toppers-which I didn’t need.

I received MANY compliments on this cake. I did make the cakes ahead of time and froze them so that they would be easier to ice.
