This Cars cake was made for one of my dearest friend’s one year old boy, as a birthday gift. The cake looks like a white walled tire from the view above. The inside was colored blue (as in Dinoco Blue in the ‘Cars’ movie) by baking a vanilla cake and placing blue food coloring throughout the batter.
I put the little boy’s name across the cake in ‘Lightening bolts’ I cut from fondant. It’s the only fondant on this cake. EVERYTHING else is butter cream. That’s the beauty of the finished product because guests found it hard to believe until we cut into it.
The top is a gold/yellow color to represent the ‘Piston cup’ and I went so far as to make the cake inside a yellow cake on the top only. The Birthday Boy received the top of the cake as his very own at his party (approx. the size of a cupcake).
This cake was definitely made in layers, and there was quite a bit of refrigeration time between detailing. Took me all day, but it was so worth it! Needless to say, I’ve made quite a few cakes since this one; however this was my first official birthday cake made after taking classes at my local Craft Store.
