Coolest Cat 50th Birthday Cake

I made an 11″ lemon sponge cake and filled it with a lemon butter icing, covered it with fondant icing which I coloured green. For the decorations I made 12 biscuits, 6 circles and 6 rectangles and covered them in black and white icing attached by a little apricot glaze. I then piped different messages on the iced biscuits to arrange on the side of the cake later.

Using modelling icing I made 3 cats, a plump body shape, formed the shapes for the back legs, heads and front legs and tails. I attached ears, faces and used ‘stamens’ for the whiskers. The paws were attached after and the collars were made from some silver elastic. I positioned the cats on a purple mat which I had textured using a rolling pin.

I attached edible silver balls along the edges of the mat. I chose a purple ribbon and placed this around the bottom edge of the cake, keeping a little back for the bow. I piped a row of white dots along the edge of the ribbon. I secured the iced biscuits to the cake with royal icing and finished off making a little piped ‘hanger’ for each biscuit.

Finally I attached the bow with a little watered down icing, a glue like consistency. This cake was a birthday surprise for my friend and the black and white cat is based on her cat Mitsy. Hope you enjoy looking at the finished cake as much as I enjoyed making it.
