I made this Chocolate Present Birthday Cake for a friend’s 30th birthday party. She saw a picture of it on Google images and asked me to make one just like it for her husband – only bigger! This would be my first attempt at a stacked cake so I was a bit nervous, but decided to give it a go.
How I made the cake:
I baked three square chocolate sponge cakes – 10″, 8″ and 6″ in size. All three cakes are filled with chocolate buttercream and covered with dark and milk fondant, except for the middle cake which is covered in soft ivory fondant.
I covered and decorated each cake separately, before stacking them. Each cake is supported by a thin cake board and cake dowels. The entire stacked cake sits on a large cake drum which I covered with dark chocolate fondant.
I then finished off the cakes with soft icing decorations and ribbon. The ribbon on the bottom tier is a real ribbon and not fondant as I couldn’t get the middle tier to sit properly on the cake, so I used a real one to allow the cake to sit flat and not wobble!
The cake was a huge success and my friend loved it. So did her husband!
