Cool Homemade Cookie Monster Birthday Half Sheet Cake

This Cookie Monster Birthday Cake was the biggest (and heaviest) cake I’ve ever made.

I made this Cookie Monster 1/2 sheet cake for my friend’s son who turned 1 earlier in September of this year. It was a bit of a challenge as I have never done a cake of this size, but it was a 2-layer cake with filling and decoration. On top of getting it to come out “just so”, I also had to transport it 40 minutes away.

I did a bottom layer of homemade Chocolate Cake and a top layer of Vanilla cake with crushed chocolate chip cookies in the batter. The filling was a vanilla buttercream with chocolate chip cookies stirred in. The outside and crumb coat was a standard homemade vanilla buttercream, with tinted icings for the design. I also put mini cookies on the outside edges and used one for the “D”. I made the Happy Birthday sign out of orange colored white chocolate, just because it was what I had in my supply.

I used the Wilton tip #233 with the mini holes on top to get Cookie Monster’s fur. It was so much easier than I thought it was going to be.

I’ve made Oreo cookie cakes before so I thought this would be the same experience. Looking back on it, I noticed the cake batter and icing for the filling, seized a bit when I stirred in the chocolate chip cookies. It was almost as if the cookies soaked up the liquid of the batter and icing. Next time, I think I will use only chocolate chips. Oh well, you live and learn!

After all, isn’t each cake a learning experience, isn’t it?
