Coolest Demolition Derby Cake

I made this Demolition Derby Cake for my son’s 3rd birthday. I got the idea because he loves watching his uncle compete in demolition derbies and I knew he would love it.

The cake is a 12×18 chocolate cake. The frosting is chocolate and cream cheese. I started by buying a package of cheap metal toy cars. I used a hammer to smash them up, and then washed them in dish soap. Once my cake was finished baking I frosted the middle of the cake with chocolate frosting making sure not to keep it smooth. I used a knife to smear it around and make it look like a lumpy, muddy derby track.

I used large pretzel sticks for the “logs” around the track and green colored cream cheese frosting for the grass. Looking at it now I wish I would have used a decorating tip to give the grass some texture. The flags were made from thin foam board glued to skewer sticks. My son absolutely loved the cake!
