Coolest Homemade 3D Dinosaur Birthday Cake

My inspiration for this Dinosaur Birthday Cake came from this website after I chose a dinosaur invitation to use for my son’s first birthday.

I used a favorite 3-layer chocolate cake recipe but made 2 batches, and baked 2 thicker 9” round tins, and then another batch of the cake in different pieces as I wasn’t fully sure what would work. The neighbors got the excess- was WAY too much, but I found the small spring form pans (must be 2”) were really useful for the feet. I didn’t even out the cake- the ‘bump’ from baking made a nice tummy for the dinosaur.

Cut one of the 9” cakes in half and ice together- I used a store-bought chocolate icing tin for this. Cut the tail, head and neck out of the other 9″ piece & ice together with the chocolate icing. I sliced the tail in 2 & iced a layer in. I cut the 2” rounds in quarters for the feet, and also iced the middle of these.

I used a home-made butter cream icing to pipe the color on the body, and used a dab of black food coloring in some of the green icing to give some contrast. Details done with a store-bought chocolate writing pen.

The process was much easier than I thought, although the piping took a while, and the icing thinned as I used it due to the heat of my hand, so I popped it in the freezer & cooled my hands off every so often.
