Cutest Homemade Pterodactyl Dinosaur Birthday Cake

My son is dinosaur crazy and his favriote is the pterodactyl. He really wanted a pterodactyl cake for his birthday but I thought I may struggle with it so I came up with this Dinosaur Birthday Cake instead!

I used a 1 liter bowl to make the body of the dinosaur, when cooled I cut in half filled with jam and butter cream and put back together. I then spread the body all over with a thin layer of butter cream. I coloured about 450g of ready to roll fondant green, rolled it out and covered the body. I smoothed it by hand and trimmed around the bottom with a pastry cutter.

The neck, head, tail and feet were all made out of the same green fondant. I used a couple of tooth picks to help the neck stay in place. I flattened out bits of yellow fondant coloured yellow to make the dots and finally made a little pterodactyl out of fondant also.

If I was to make this again I would probably invest in a cake smoother to get a better finish on the body of the dinosaur. I would also buy some sugar glue, as I relied on dampening the fondant with water before attaching the pieces together.
