Coolest Homemade Dora the Explorer Birthday Cake for my Nephew

I just completed this Dora the Explorer Birthday Cake for my niece and nephew’s 4th birthday.

I used three layers of vanilla cake baked in 20cm tins for the bottom layer and two layers of vanilla cake baked in a 10cm tin for the top.

I used Raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream to sandwich the layers together and covered the whole cake in more vanilla buttercream. I always put my cakes in the fridge as the buttercream crusts faster. To support the layers I always use jumbo drinking straws cut to size, as they are very cheap compared to the dowels I have seen online.

The cakes were then covered in fondant icing that I coloured using gel food colouring. Around the base I placed rolled balls of fondant and stuck them down using icing. Around the base of the top tier I rolled two colours of fondant icing and then twisted them together and attached it with more icing.

The picture of Dora and boots is actually a window sticker that came with a sticker kit and I just attached a lolly stick to the back and pushed it into the cake. The stars are made of fondant and have flower wire pushed into them and then pushed into the cake.
