Coolest Drinks Cake

I made this drinks cake for my husband’s 50th birthday. I decided against an “over the hill” theme because I turn 50 next year.

It’s two 8″ round cakes stacked then carved to create the bowl. The cakes are frosted with butter cream icing.

The beer bottles and the ice are made from sugar and corn syrup. The caps were painted with gold luster dust mixed with vodka (alcohol dries faster and doesn’t add moisture to the sugar).

The labels were made by scanning a real label then printing them on edible wafer paper.

The butterfly is also edible wafer paper. The design was brushed lightly with vegetable oil to make the butterfly shine and to protect the paper from the butter cream icing. (wafer paper will dissolve if it’s allowed to get too damp)

The golf balls and peanuts were molded from chocolate. There’s a small chocolate lady bug too, but it’s hard to see in the photo. (near the golf tees) The golf tees, the 19th hole label, and golf divot tool are fondant. The divot was brushed with pearl luster dust to give it a metalic look.

The grass is green tinted butter cream frosting applied with the Wilton “grass” tip.

  1. Thanks!

I made my own molds using “Amazing Mold Putty” and real beer bottles. The bottles on the cake are made from sugar and corn syrup that is heated until it starts to turn amber. I pour it into the molds, coat the molds, and dump out the excess sugar mixture.

The “ice” was also made from sugar and corn syrup – it just wasn’t heated as long.

  3. Hi there – I have been experimenting with making my own edible beer bottles and am wondering…are yours solid or hollow in the centre? Thanks:) Gorgeous job!

  4. I saw that you originally posted some directions for the Bottles and Ice earlier, but you did not specify how much.

Could you send me some detailed info?

My youngest son is turning 21 in a week and that would be a great cake idea. Thank you so much dflippin102[at]gmail.com

  5. What a fabulous idea and great details with using golf, and beer to celebrate your hubby’s 50th. Like so many others, I too would love to learn how you made the ice and bottles by using corn syrup & sugar. The last time I made ice I used gelatin, but it was in the winter so it was much cooler, I’m afraid that it would probably melt in this heat.
Please send me details and info.

Thank you & keep on creating cakes,
    Roshael

  6. I know you get that a lot but how do you do the bottles and the ice? This cake is amazing. My boss is having her bday on the 20th of this month and I want to make a cake like this for her.
