Cool Homemade 2 Tier Elmo Birthday Cake Idea

My daughter loves Elmo, and this Elmo Birthday Cake Idea was super-easy to make! I baked the tiers and froze them (it’s so much easier to frost a frozen cake!) a couple days in advance. I also made marshmallow fondant a few days before, and kept it wrapped up tight in the refrigerator.

The night before the party I frosted the cakes with plain old white frosting, rolled out the fondant, and layed it over the tiers. I copied the outline of Elmo’s face from a picture I had on one of her toy boxes. I used prepared black writing icing to draw the outline, and prepared red decorating icing to fill in his “fur”. I rolled two little balls of fondant for Elmo’s eyes (with some black writing icing as his eyeballs). One more little ball of fondant mixed up with some orange writing icing made the nose (I shaped it with my hands so it was narrower at the top and wider at the bottom).

I piped red decorating icing around the bases of the cakes to cover up any imperfections when I cut the edges of the fondant. And it made a good color-coordinated border. The confetti cut-outs around the side added a little pizzazz, and voila! The whole decorating process took me about and hour and a half – it would have been shorter but it took a long time for me to roll out the refrigerated fondant – next time I’ll just wait until it’s room temperature!
