Cool Elmo Cake

I baked my Elmo cake in a 14″ x 14″ square pan using 2 cake mixes. I took out about a cup of the batter and baked in a small glass mixing bowl for Elmo’s face.

After the cake cooled I trimmed the round one to be more of an oval shape and cut out a mouth then placed on top of square cake. I made the eyes and nose on a plate out of stiff buttercream icing with a #12 round tip and set aside to let it firm up.

I iced the whole cake with white buttercream. Then with a toothpick drew his body, arms and hands. Using Wilton’s no taste red paste food coloring I filled in the body and covered the head using a #21 star tip pulling the icing out to resemble fur. Then filled in the mouth with black icing and the pupils on the eyes. I transfered the eyes and nose onto the cake with a small spatula. Then added different size dots to the side of the cake in various colors.

Using the big round tip I made a number 2. Then wrote my message. I dipped my finger in corn starch and flattened each dot and the number 2 to make them smooth. Also flattened the black mouth. I used the same big round tip to make a border.
