Coolest Fairy Birthday Cake

I made this Fairy Birthday Cake for my baby girl’s first birthday. It was a light and fluffy banana cake recipe because she loves bananas. I cooked it in an 8 inch spring form pan so that it would be high and rounded (to look a bit like a hill).

I wanted to make a cute fairy cake to fit with her fairy themed party. I got the idea for this cake from another cake on this website that used a fairy doll to sit on top of the cake. After a bit of searching, I found this fairy ornament in a gift shop. It was one of Ebony’s birthday presents and is a lovely reminder of her special party cake.

The original cake had shaped flowers decorating it and fondant icing. Because it was a little kids party I wanted to use butter icing and lollies because they are often the only bits the kids eat – even when it is delicious light and moist cake!

It was a really easy cake to make as it was a smooth simple shape and only required one layer of icing. I chose a variety of pink and purple lollies to decorate with – pink and white marshmallows (cut in half, powder side out), pink and purple smarties, pink and purple Mentos, pink sugared jellies (cut in half, sugar side out) and pink and purple mini musks/mini florals from a specialty lolly shop. I placed the lollies so that the colour and shape of the lollies were evenly varied. I used the mini musks/florals around each of the bigger lollies to separate them. I was hoping to create a kind of stepping-stones pattern to fit with the fairy on the mushroom.

To finish it off, I decided to use some pink sprinkles to scatter around the fairy. Unfortunately the icing had ‘set/dried’ by then and they needed to be pushed into the icing to stay on. Next time I would do that bit first, while the icing was still gooey.

I was really pleased with the way this cake turned out and will probably use the concept again. It would be a great design for those new to cake decorating. Maximum gorgeousness for minimum effort! Everyone loved the cake and unfortunately there weren’t any left-overs!

  5. Thanks for the lovely comments :)

I found the fairy ornament in Dolls and Co, Sunshine Coast Qld, Australia dollsandco@optusnet.com.au. I looked for a long time online and couldn’t find anything I liked. Try specialty dolls/teddy bear or gift shops. Hope that helps.

  6. Your cake & ornament are the inspiration for my daughter’s 2nd birthday cake & fairy party. Thank you. I was so impressed with the fairy on toadstool ornament that I contacted Dolls & Co at Palmview, Qld, as per your info & spoke to Jo who was kind enough to order one in and post it to me in Brisbane. All up it cost $10 Inc postage. I’m sure she’d oblige anyone else who wants one, she was very helpful. Tel 07 5439 6111 email paperlicious@bigpond.com

  7. You said it came with fondant icing but you used buttercream, so did you remove the fondant first or ice over it?

  8. Hi,

I made the cake myself. The fondant I referred was that which decorated the cake that gave me my inspiration. I didn’t want to use fondant as I prefer to work with and eat buttercream. My apologies for being ambiguous.

  9. The company doesn’t have such email address anymore. Any knowledge of the product where-abouts from here? Thanks for your consideration.

  10. There are some amazing fairy cakes online, but there is something very sweet and adorable simple and not over the top. It looks fairly easy to do but looks so beautiful. I am looking forward to making this for my daughters 4th birthday! Thank you so much for sharing this with us!!

  11. I just wanted you to know I made and decorated this cake for my daughter’s 1st birthday and it was fantastic! I found the same ceramic fairy in a cake decorating shop in Melbourne and collected the lollies to decorate the sides. The icing colour I went to a bakery near-by that specializes in cakes and got some of their veg shortening to use instead of butter in the icing to prevent it turning a green colour when I added the blue. Overall I was VERY pleased with the result and got loads of compliments! I really wanted to thank you for your original posting of the cake that gave me such inspiration and joy in making it! Thanks Jacqui

  12. Thanks you have inspired me to make the same cake for my daughter with 2 tiers and a few extra butterflies just for fun.

Just wanted to let you all know that Jo at Dolls & Co at Palmview, Qld, was very helpful and still has that beautiful fairy. Give her a call!

  14. Do you think she would ship overseas? LOL I will contact her on email as would cost too much to call!

Your cake is awesome and DD wants a fairy cake and this is perfect!!

  15. To make the aqua coloured icing, I made a butter icing and them coloured it with liquid food colouring in blue and green, start with 2 drops of green and 1 drop of blue, mix well and see how it looks. Keep adding colour until you reach the desired colour.

  16. My soon to be 4 year old is going to love this at her fairy party. Thanks for the inspiration.I have ordered the fairy from Jo and cant wait to put it all together.

  17. This cake is such a great idea! My daughter wanted a fairy cake for her birthday and when i stumbled across yours i thought it was a perfect idea.I am only a beginner cake decorator so it is wonderful!

  18. I’m in the United States and my daughter is in love with this cake, but I don’t know what a ‘lollie’ is. Hoping you get this soon!

  19. this is just what I would love to make for my daughter’s fourth birthday, thank you very much.

    also Kim, lollies = candy.

  20. The lollies are the candy decorating the cake. In Australia we call ‘candy’ lollies :) Decorate the cake with circle-shaped candy in various sizes. I chose candy in shades of pink and purple.

  21. I love this cake design and really think that the cake topper is necessary. Anyone know where I could get this in the US?

  22. Hi,

I don’t know where you could get it in the US, but when I bought the original one I didn’t realise it was a ‘cake topper’. It was in a specialty gift shop with a range of fairy ornaments. I would suggest looking around in gift shops to see what you can find, there are lots of fairy ornaments available. Good Luck with it :)

  23. if you’ve got time, can you please share the banana cake recipe, good to have one that fits that size tin and rises to that shape :-) Thanks

  24. I love your cake a fantastic job. Im going to make it for my daughters 3rd birthday. I hope i can find a cute fairy to put on the top
