Cool Homemade 2-Tier Farm Birthday Cake

I made this two tiered Farm Birthday Cake for my son’s third birthday party. The bottom tier is a two-layer 10” round; the top tier is a two-layer 6” round. I used two boxes of cake mix—each box made one 10” cake and one 6” cake. It took a total of three cans of icing to frost the whole cake plus a can of chocolate icing. (I find it easier to get black icing by adding black food coloring to chocolate icing as opposed to white icing.)

For the spots on the cow tier, I drew the spots on parchment paper with a pencil, cut them out, placed them on the cake and traced them with a toothpick. Then I could remove the parchment spots and outline them and fill them in with the black chocolate icing using a piping bag and tip #3. I used a basketweave tip #48 and white icing to make the barn door and windows. I used multi-opening tip #233 for the hay and grass. After making the yellow hay, I noticed that the icing was a bit too soft to hold up that “hayish” look. So I put the green icing in the fridge for a few minutes so it would harden up just enough for the grass to look like it had individual blades.

Overall this was a pretty easy cake to make and looked super cute with the cow print table cloth and balloons that I had at the party. And my son LOVED his “cow cake.”
