Cool Homemade Farming Cake

We decided to have a John Deere themed birthday party this year for our three year old and one year old (Their birthdays are only five days apart). This farming cake was the oldest’s cake. He’s very much into tractors right now.

This is one of my first attempts at cake decorating, but I had so much fun making this cake. It’s a two layer 9″ X 13″ yellow cake with buttercream icing. The trees, tractor, plant sprouts, and row markers I sculpted from fondant. I just used store bought fondant and added coloring. I couldn’t find the tip I needed for the grass in my area and didn’t have time to order one, so my husband came up with a brilliant idea. He drilled little holes in the end of a thimble and it fit into the coupler just like a regular tip! He’s so resourceful.

The tree trunks and fence are pretzel sticks. For the field I tinted some icing brown and sprinkled vanilla wafer crumbs on top to look like dirt. One thing that I’ve learned is that it really helps and looks more professional to level off the layers before inverting them.
