Our 6 year old is still crazy about firetrucks and firemen and requested a cake to reflect that love! I made a 2 tiered cake and iced it with buttercream. I then made a marshmallow fondant and shaped the bus, stop sign, road and ladder with the tinted fondant.
I used almond bark candy for the flames on top. I melted the almond bark in the microwave and then tinted it red with a food coloring paste. I gave it a marbled sort of streaky look by not blending the red in all the way. I then spread it out thinly on parchment paper in roughly the shape of flames. When it hardened I placed it on the top of the cake fastened with more buttercream frosting.
We placed the candles in the middle of the flames and placed emergency vehicles and Playmobil figures around the homemade firefighter them birthday cake. Its not a professional job by any means but my birthday boy loved it!
