Cool Homemade Firetruck Birthday Cake

My son Jared loves big trucks of all kinds, for his 4th birthday he was absolutely sure that he wanted a firetruck birthday cake. I look forward to making my children a custom-ordered cake for their birthdays, so I was excited about this challenge.

To construct the cake I baked a half-sheet of cherry chip cake, 3 boxes of cake mix fill a half-sheet pan perfectly, and it bakes at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Just make sure you grease the pan REALLY well before hand and that you have a big enough cake board. Then I just cut the main rectangle for the bottom of the body and stacked 2 more smaller ones on front to make the cab and one more on back to make the ladder portion of the truck.

I found it much easier to construct by frosting each layer as I built it. I used dots for the red and yellow lights on top, black licorice for much of the border. I couldn’t resist a LEGO fireman, the Twizzler’s Pull n Peel fit perfectly in his hand like a fire hose! I just wrapped the Pull n Peel around a pretzel rod.

I used Oreos for the wheels and a lot of checking back with this site for ideas as I went along. For the ladder on top of the cake I just cut and frosted an extra piece of cake red, stuck it on the truck and then piped the ladder design. I had so much fun making this cake and can’t wait to see Jared’s reaction!
