Coolest Gift Wrapped Cake

A friend asked me to do a cake for her daughter’s 4th birthday and she found a Gift Wrapped Cake similar to this one on this site. I used 3 different size square pans and baked a vanilla cake. I made buttercream frosting which I divided and colored. I frosted each cake.

I then used homemade marshmallow fondant which I divided up and colored. I cut out one inch strips to place across all four sides of each cake and using different size circle fondant cutters I cut out the polka-dots and then using a fondant cutting tool cut out strips which I used for the swirls.

I placed the polka-dots and swirls on the cakes using a damp paint brush. I then cut out strips on fondant for my bow which I let dry for about an hour and also made the fondant curls to place in my bow. I used buttercream frosting to hold the bow in place.

The homemade gift wrapped cake took about 5 hours total to make and decorate. I stacked the cakes and using a large dot tip, added the strip to the bottom of each cake.

  1. This is a great cake. I am wondering if you had to transport it and if you had any difficulty doing so given the height of the cake? What do you use to store tall cakes until “party time?”

  2. Hi, Yes I did have to transport this cake. It isn’t as high as it looks because each cake is only one layer. Once at the party I put on the top tier and finished up the trim. I actually could have had it completely done and it would have been fine. I used a cake box with the top cut off and I kept the cake in my fridge…had to rearrange the shelves a little. As for supporting each layer, I always use a cake board cut to size under each layer and I put lollipop sticks in each layer to help support. You can buy the plastic supports but the sticks work just fine for my cakes. I hope this helps!
