Coolest Gruffalo Cake

My little girl and I were captivated by the Gruffalo book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. So when she asked for a homemade Gruffalo cake for her birthday, I had to give it a go.

I got the template for the cake from www.gruffalo.com, but actually decided to use the paper mask as a template and blow it up so that it printed out onto A4 paper, I needed a very large cake because my daughter has invited her whole class and more to her party. This cake will easily be big enough for 35-40 children.

For this cake you will need:

12oz margarine or butter

12oz sugar

6 eggs

16oz self raising flour

2 tubs of Betty Crocker chocolate icing

1 packet of coloured fondant icing.

My tip for icing the cake with the Betty Crocker icing is to crumb cover the cake first and then place the cake in the freezer for an hour, after which time you can take the homemade gruffalo cake out and smooth over the remaining tub of icing.

  1. I so wish I had seen this one before, I am in the middle of making a cat cake for my daughter, she would have gone mad over a gruffalo one.
