Coolest Guitar Cake

This guitar cake that was made for my daughter’s 17th birthday…was supposed to be a surprise but as it was full size I couldn’t hide it!

I made this cake by baking 3 14X14″ square cakes using a basic Victoria sponge recipe. In total I used 23 eggs, very boring, adding one by one but well worth it. I thought about the Madeira recipe as lots of people seemed to recommend this but this was first attempt at this cake and I didn’t have time for a trial run..oops…

I then used my daughter’s guitar and made a stencil by drawing around the guitar. I cheated a bit by using a pre made filling. I also used this to crumb the cake. The hardest part for me was the red icing, trying to get it rolled out to the size I needed and actually get it on the cake!!. I got there on the 4th attempt.

The lesson I learnt from this cake is nails. I used just normal 6″ nails to use as a heating core, never heard of a heating core before this cake. Also finger nails, every time I thought I was there with the icing i managed to stick my fingernails in it and ruin the smooth effect!

Everyone was really impressed with the cake. Now I have 2 orders for cake…just for friends, couldn’t do that for a living. Took me 7 hours!
