Cool Homemade Handbag Birthday Cake for my Daughter

I made a Handbag Birthday Cake for my daughter’s 2nd birthday.

I used a Betty Crocker cake mix, I think a Devils food one and put it in a large Bakers secret tin. The tin is large, 12 – 14 inches, has curved edges and is a spring form tin. I bought it for doing Christmas cakes.

I baked the cake and cut it in half and it was the perfect shape for a handbag. I actually made the fondant icing, which I don’t think I would do again (I would just buy it), and I used licorice for the piping.

I used a pipe cleaner to support the handle, but have since learned that acetate is the way to go. I used a Ravioli edger to “quilt” the fondant.

The cake was covered in buttercream, (which I wouldn’t do again, I would do ganache). I didn’t know that you are meant to brush with sugar syrup to make the fondant stick to it, so the fondant was just pushed on.

It was an interesting experiment and I am very proud of my result. After buying the book Planet cake, I have learnt what I did wrong and what will be easier for next time.
