Coolest Hess Truck Birthday Cake

This cake was for my nephew’s third birthday. He loves trucks, so I decided to make him a homemade Hess truck birthday cake.

I baked a 13 X 9 sheet cake, cut and stacked it. I iced the layers and outside with butter-cream.

I made the wheels out of fondant that I dyed black and red. I then carved the cake so the wheels would fit in. I used a toothpick to secure them in place.

If I ever make this cake again, I may use a layer of rice krispy treats under the truck body so that it appears as though it is sitting on the wheels.

I’ve learned that you need to make sure the outside of the cake is smooth before you put the fondant on the cake. Fondant does not hide lumps and bumps!

After I iced it, I covered the cake in white fondant. I died fondant different colors and decorated the truck. I used silver pearl dust and vanilla to paint the silver pieces on the cake.

In this picture, you can see the actual Hess toy truck that I used to make the cake (it’s behind the cake).
