Easy Homemade High School Musical Birthday Cake

I created this High School Musical Birthday Cake using an 11” square cake tin. The cake was a simple sponge cake with whipped cream and jam filling. I then covered the cake with butter icing and placed a smooth layer of red sugarpaste on top.

To create the curtain effect I rolled out two rectangles of red sugarpaste and made indents by pressing a plastic dowling rod into the sugarpaste. I then placed the ‘curtains’ on top of the smooth layer. To create the lettering I used alphabet cookie cutters and when the yellow sugarpaste had hardened I used a white icing pen to create the dots.

The letters were attached using edible gum glue. To create the shooting stars I used a small star shaped cookie cutter and then inserted cake wire, I left the stars to harden before inserting into the cake. For the scroll i simply cut out a rectangle of sugarpaste, cut the end to give the triangle effect and then folded them back.
