Cute Homemade Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Cake

We decided to make a ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ birthday cake for my son’s first birthday, and it turned out wonderfully! I have no experience in making or icing cakes, but this wasn’t too difficult (time consuming yes – it took about 2 hours to ice!, but not difficult).

We used two bundt tins to make the cakes, and then cut the required pieces, shaped them and rearranged the pieces to make a caterpillar body and head shape (we did a practice try a week before the birthday).

For the icing we just used regular icing sugar + water + food colouring (adding more or less drops of green/blue to get the different greens). The cake itself was just chocolate sponge cake (out of a box!)

We used blocks of Toblerone chocolate for the feet, smarties for the eyes, and chewy candy for the spikes on the caterpillar’s back. The blue antennae were made of icing sugar.

The ‘1’ was shaped using some of the remaining cake, and decorated with icing and edible silver balls.
