Coolest Kipper The Dog Cake

Kipper was a PBS program. The star was a great dog with a basket, a blanket, a ball, a bone, and a toy rabbit (that he treated like a teddy bear). This Kipper the dog cake was made using a double sheet cake as a base, which is frosted and set aside.

The dog itself is made of cake and then wrapped in fondant. With the fondant we also made the ball and bone and rabbit and blanket. We painted kipper and his stuff with watered down food coloring. For some of the parts, we wished we had colored the whole bit of fondant first, it would have come out better. The whole thing stayed together pretty well.

We had to use toothpicks to keep his ears and tail in place, but otherwise, the fondant sticks well if you use a little bit of water to hold it together. Kipper’s not popular anymore, so we could not find a cake decorations (plastic or edible) to use.

When the toddler who received this cake first saw it, wow, worth all the crazy work! We used the books for reference with the colors and I think if we ever had to do a second one, it would be much smoother, but this was a hit. My young daughters did most of the work.
