Coolest Ladybug Birthday Cake

I wanted to do a ladybug birthday cake for my daughter’s 2nd birthday. Cake mixes were used for all the cakes. I made two 9×13 sheet cakes and frosted and stacked them together.

For the ladybug bodies, I used the Wilton mini-ball pan. I wanted red and black icing so I just used the ready-made Wilton Decorating Icing. That way I didn’t have to worry about the flavor. I bought tips that were made to fit on the frosting tubes.

To decorate the bodies, I first made the dots by drawing black circles of icing and filled them in. I just used the regular circular tip for the dots. After I had the dots done, I used the star tip on the red icing and made stars around the black dots and then filled in the rest of the body.

For the ladybug heads, I used the 100-Calorie Pack Mini Oreo Cakesters. The size was perfect. I drew eyes and a mouth with white and black icing. Then I put a small amount of icing on the back of the cookie and stuck it to the body.

Small pieces of black licorice were used for the antennae and fit right into the cookie. The legs were also black licorice cut thinly.

To write on the cake, I used food color pens. I am an amateur when it comes to cake decorating so I used red, white, and black jelly beans to edge the bottom of the sheet cake instead of icing. I was very pleased with how it turned out and it got rave reviews!
