Coolest Ladybug Cake

I decided to make my daughter a ladybug cake for her 3rd birthday after seeing one in a magazine.

I baked the body in a pyrex glass bowl, and made a few muffin cakes to use for the head. (I made the muffin cakes in a few different sizes because I wasn’t sure what I needed).

I cut the dome off the top of the pyrex bowl cake and placed it upside down on the board. I dyed my fondant red and placed this over the body. This was very time consuming and would have been much easier if I had of known about icing colouring gels – I used almost half a bottle of red food colouring to get the fondant red and so had to add A LOT of icing sugar to the fondant to get it back to the correct consistency! Fortunately I needed a much smaller amount of black fondant because I had similar difficulty with it.

I trimmed the muffin cake to fit as the head around the body. I dyed some fondant black and placed this over the muffin. I cut some of the black fondant into circles and placed these spots on the ladybug.

I cut a strip of licorice to place down the centre of the ladybug’s body. Licorice was also used for the antennae. You can see I had trouble getting these pieces to remain upright! I added a small ball of black fondant at the end of the antennae. The eyes are made of white and black fondant.

I was thrilled with the result, as was the birthday girl.
