Coolest Lightning McQueen Birthday Cake

I made this Homemade Lightning McQueen Birthday Cake for my son’s first birthday. I started out by baking a chocolate cake in a 3D car shaped tin I got from our local cake specialty shop. It had to be baked for a long time as there was so much mixture it took a long time to cook through, twice as long as I expected in fact. When using a tin like this beware that it really needs to be well greased so that you can get the cake out in one piece!

To decorate Lightning McQueen I used marzipan. I started with thinly rolled red marzipan (500g), rolled out into a huge blob which I had to drape over the entire cake – it was very thin so I had to be creative in getting it onto the cake without tearing it. Next time I’ll use more than 500g!

Next I formed the spoiler and attached it to the rear of the car. I then decorated Lightning McQueen with windows and a windscreen(using white marzipan) and created the wheels with black and red marzipan. The brown and orange colours used on the bonnet were made by rolling several colours together to blend them.

Finally I used blue icing in a tube to pipe my son’s name on the spoiler. I hope you like it (all the kids at his party did!) and I had a delightful time making it.
