My older son now has turned 5 and his next request was a Lightning Mcqueen Birthday Cake. Oh dear, this one was a tricky one as he wanted it in 3D. After weeks of planning and designing I thought I would use the same style which I had used for the Spiderman cake, so I first baked a large chocolate cake, a day earlier as usual and a small square butter cake for the car figure.
The hardest part was to cut out the butter cake into Lightning Mcqueen, which after so much thought I had been successful in shaping to the closest I could do to a Lightning Mcqueen by using just a coloring page which I could only get hold of at that time for dimensions. I first set the cut car figure on top of the cake, which was the most tricky part as I had to somehow slide the cake of the the board which I had used to design the figure on.
Then iced it with a base color of white butter icing, then outlined the car with black icing to bring out the 3D figure so I could fill in the colors correctly where possible. Before filling out the rest of the cake with its colors I used flaked almonds to cover the sides of the cake. Colored icing used were red, yellow and black, also used as outlining of the cake.
Lastly, sprinkle of chocolate hails were used to give an effect of a rocky road. At the end, though some of the folks thought it was a truck not knowing in the world who Lightning Mcqueen was, my son thanked me and said how great it looked and pulled it of to a more better Mcqueen then he had imagined!
