Coolest Lightning McQueen Cake

I made this Lightning McQueen Cake for Sebastian’s 3rd birthday. I baked a vanilla cake approx. 40 x 50cm x 6cm high. I cut two rectangular shapes, one smaller than the other and stacked the smaller one on top. Using a serrated knife I cut off bits and created curves to get the basic shape (in some areas I added bits).

I covered the entire shape in butter icing (Butter, icing sugar and drop milk) and smoothed out the bumps to perfect the shape. I rolled out prepared royal icing 750g to 1kg (red) and trimmed the bottom. I used a piece of folded cardboard and covered it in red icing to create the rear spoiler and positioned it at the rear of the car. The windows were cut out from rolled icing (white) using a stencil I drew freehand and stuck them on into place.

The tires are made from flattened balls of black icing and then wrapped in licorice straps to create the ‘tread’ look (found on the supermarket shelf). The rusteze logo and the side logos I created using a combination of hand made stencils from prints and freehand painting using food dye (this was the most labour intensive task in the process but worth the effort as it finished the cake.

Everything on the cake with the exception of the cardboard used for the rear spoiler is edible. The flags and the cars friends are props I added to set the scene. Tip: draw it a paper first to get a feel for size, position etc.
