Cool Homemade Mario Mushroom Cake

This Mario Mushroom Cake I made for my son who is turning 11. This was actually one of the easier cakes I have made!

I baked the mushroom top in a Pyrex bowl and covered it in the red fondant. I also baked the stump of the mushroom in the same Pyrex, but I shaved the sides down a bit and covered it in white fondant.

The base of the cake was baked in a large spring form pan. I greased the whole pan so when I took the sides off the spring form, the cake was all in tact. I then covered it in the blue fondant, made the clouds out of gum paste and piped on the scenery.

I decided that the cake needed something more, so I decided to make little Mario mushrooms to go all around the large mushroom. I know that the mushroom stump should have been a little wide.

I used buttercream frosting to make the fluffy cloud-like border around the bottom of the cake.

It took me about 3 hours to complete, but it was the first time I had made this one. I would be able to make it in probably half the time, now that I know what I am doing!

Have a great day!

  1. I think this is too cute. I am trying to do a mushroom and using fondant for the first time. When I put the fondant on the top of the mushroom I tried to flip it to cover the bottom but ended up with a cake that was in pieces….do you have any tips on that?
