Coolest Monkey Birthday Cake

I made this Monkey Birthday Cake for my daughter’s 1st birthday party. We had a whole monkey theme going on with monkey’s and bananas hanging from the chandelier’s, etc!

I made this cake using a 10-12″ diameter bowl (plus a cupcake for the ears). I frosted it using chocolate buttercream frosting and a regular buttercream frosting colored a pale yellow.

I used one cupcake cut in half and anchored in with toothpicks for the ears.

Frost the entire cake using the chocolate buttercream frosting. Allow to harden/set a bit before you do the yellow. Do the inside of the ears and make an oval for the face. I piped the oval using a decorator tip and then filled it in and smoothed it out with a small spatula. I used single rope black licorice (impossible to find where I am, but got on the internet) for the mouth and two short snips for the nose. I used one black licorice drop cut in half for the eyes.

I used a multi-holed decorating tip for the hair and I think you could do something more creative than I did for the border around the bottom of the cake.

This was my first real decorated cake I ever made! It was surprisingly easy, a great “beginner” cake!
