Cool Homemade Monsters Inc Cake

I started a tradition in my family to have a homemade birthday cake each year for my children’s birthdays. I love mixing colors and creating works of art on canvas, so I figured I could try my hand at designing cakes.

For Kyle’s first birthday I made a Lightening McQueen cake. I loved how it turned out! So this year when he was turning 2, I was excited to do it again!!! His favorite movie right now is Monster’s Inc, so I thought it would be perfect (since he can be a little monster himself) I would design him a Mike Wazowski homemade Monsters Inc cake.

I used 2 boxes of white cake mix and added a box of pudding to the batter. I poured the mix into two 9 or 10in rounds, a 4in round and a bread pan. I found the frosting recipe online and don’t remember it at the moment. I froze the cake over night and pulled it out in the morning to frost.

This is my favorite part… Mixing my frosting palette.

I had the DVD picture of the little monster Mike… I mixed up colors to match his skin, eyes, and teeth and had about 10 different colored bowls of frosting lining my counter tops when I was done.

After freezing the cake, I shaped the little monster, which wasn’t quite as fat as I had wanted (because I didn’t have a tray big enough to set him on) and frosted the cake with a frosting knife.

I had a great time!!! Can’t wait until next year!

  1. This is a great cake and you did a fantastic job! Can you tell me what you used the 4in round and the bread pan for? I am trying to make a “Mike” cake for my son’s birthday too.
    Thanks!
