Coolest Number One Birthday Cake

I made this Number One birthday cake with 4 boxes of choc cake mix in a large rectangle roasting dish. My husband drew a template or the number one and I cut it out of the cake (refrigerate for a couple of hours beforehand, I find its easier than cutting a fresh spongy cake and less crumbs).

I covered with butter cream and refrigerated for 3 hours, but didn’t smooth it over properly so when I covered with the fondant some of the lines showed through. That’s why I ended up piping with butter cream after I layed all the flowers and butterflies etc. Cut around the edges of cake to remove excess fondant and use off cuts to make small balls to hide where you cut. I used left over fondant to make the different colored balls too.

I made the name hearts and stars, flowers, butterflies, mushrooms and ladybirds a week ahead and they are really simple to make. Place them where you like and attach with left over butter cream. The name was cut out using shapes and attached to the hearts and stars, use toothpicks to attach to the cake. Two of my nieces had their birthdays together so I made this cake and a Dora cake for their special day (which I have also posted on this site).

It is only my second attempt at using MMF and I enjoyed it so much I think I went a little crazy learning how to make all the different things for each cake. They turned out really cool and everyone loved them!
