Coolest Octopus Cake

This octopus cake came from an inspiration of many cakes on this site.

First I made 2 Victoria sponge caks and then made a small Victoria in a ceramic bowl. The 2 round cakes were stuck together with jam and buttercream and covered in blue icing, the icing was not stiff so that run off occurred and it looked more sea like.

The cakes from the bowl was covered in yellow icing and had yellow sprinkles. The palm tree was made of Rollo’s stuck on a wooden skewer which went though the whole cake to keep it in place, the palm leaves are green foil paper stuck on with icing. I made sea critters using off cuts of cake covered in royal icing (legs made of rolled royal icing).

The pebbles are also royal icing with black food colouring not ribbed in completely which gives the marble effect. This cake was so fun to make, wanted to make lots of other sea critters but they wouldn’t fit on! Treasure chests can be easily made from square bits of cake and flat bits of icing can make jelly fish, fish and seaweed.

  1. This cake looks so great! For my French class we have to make a sea creature cake for “le possin d’avri” or the fish of April(April fools day). I took the Wilton 1 cake decorating course last year. I wanted to do an octopus really badly. This cake gave me so many great ideas. I think I will win the contest. Thanks so much for the great ideas. I will tell you if I win the contest!
